BLA SSCO B'BALL - NEW COMPETITION FORMAT

Bay Leadership Academy SSCO School's were invited to compete in a competiton with a twist.  Based on the  YST Principles of Competition (on your School Games Dashboard), particuarly number 2: The focus on the process rather than the outcome (on the learning and values development of the young person rather than the result).  We manipulated the competition parametres to highlight and award effort, not only in matches, but individually and as a team during various fun skills activities and challenges.

I invited BLA SSCO schools to a Year 3/4 Basketball festival, with several changes:

  • Teachers selected pupils with limited basketball experience.
  • The event was a mixture of basketball skills, delivered by BLA Sports Leaders, friendly matches and timed Skills Challenges.  Teams scored points on the various activities.
  • Teams scored points based on the effort they put in on the leaders actvities.
  •  During the matches, teams score 1 point for hitting the backboard, 2 points for hitting the ring and 3 points for scoring a basket.  It did not matter what the score was.
  • Teams scored points for successfully completing the timed challenges in dribbling, shooting and passing.
There was no trophy for this event.  Schools aimed to get over the 20 points mark to win their very own school basketball.  Everyone did fantastically well, and after adding all their scores together, all schools manged to achieve the target of 20+ points.
Congratulations to a pupil from Mossgate Primary School, who was chosen by the Sports Leaders, out of all the participants to win the BLA SSCO Star Award.  This is given to the one participant who displays key leadership attributes, including resiliance, team work, friendship to name a few.  He also won his own basketball to practice at home.

Special thanks to the staff from Sandylands, Grosvenor Park, Mossgate, Overton, St Peters, Westgate, West End, Slyne with Hest and Bolton le Sands.  Your feedback was invaluable.
