BLA SSCO Basketball & Korfball Festivals

Thanks to all the BLA SSCO Schools who attended the Year 3/4 Basketball and Korfball festivals, both running simultaneously and both competitions with a twist.  We invited pupils who had not really played these sports before, so we coached them the skills first and then had some friendly matches.

The Korfball was delivered by the amazing Andrew Barnes - Mr Korfball, on a very chilly evening.  They did some throwing catching skills then went into lots of friendly matches, introducing news rules after each match, building up the players knowledge of the brilliant sport.

The basketball was a unique event in that each team had a score card which teachers filled out, with their teams accumulating points throughout the evening, with everyone trying to get over the magical 25 points mark to achieve a prize for their school.

The first activities were a rotation around four different basketball skill games - dribbling, shooting, passing and protecting the ball.  The games were delivered by the fantastic Bay Leadership Academy Sports Leaders, who not only coached the pupils but marked them out of 10 for the effort they put in to each activity.

Once the rotations were finished, it was time to put these new skills to the test with some friendly matches.  This time though, it was not 3 points for a win etc.  Teams accumulated points by hitting the back board (1 point), the ring (2 points) or getting it in (3 points).  The teachers tallied up each fixture score and added it to the overal score.  Mixed in with the games, were some skills chalenges for the teams who were not in a fixture, again the scores added on to their overall score.

The results were as follows:

Congratulations to a Mossgate pupil for winning the Basketball Star Award and Grosvenor Park pupil for winning the Korfball Star Award.  These are special awards that are chosen by the Sports Leaders and given to the one participant who displays the best Leadership Skills.

An awesome, if not a bit chilly evening of sport, well done to all involved.  Thanks to Bay Leadership Academy for hosting and providing the Sports Leaders who delivered the whole event.
